The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has expressed firm commitment to ensuring the completion and functionality of the MEST Foundry and E-Waste Holding Centre at Kwabenya in Accra.
Speaking during a working visit to the facility on Thursday, 8th January 2025, Mr. Buah, who also doubles as the Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), described the foundry as a critical backbone for Ghana’s industrial transformation and stressed that it must not fail.
According to him, the foundry project has suffered several setbacks over the years, with the current effort marking the fifth attempt at making it operational.
He said this history makes it imperative for the government to take decisive steps to complete the project.
“We need to go back to the drawing board to understand the outstanding issues, the equipment yet to be procured, and the total cost required to make the facility fully functional.
“This one must not fail,” the Minister stated.
Mr. Buah revealed that although some equipment has already been delivered, there are still critical gaps that must be addressed, including enhanced security at the facility.
He indicated that he has tasked management to prepare a comprehensive report detailing the equipment available, outstanding works, and the financial requirements needed to complete the project.

He further disclosed plans to engage other sector Ministers and brief the Cabinet on the current status of the foundry, with the aim of mobilising the necessary resources.
“I will work with my colleague sector Ministers to properly brief Cabinet and make a strong case for the resources needed. This is clearly in the national interest,” he said.
When asked about timelines, the Minister expressed determination to see tangible progress before the end of the year.
“We must make some progress this year, and I am determined to ensure that happens,” he added.
The MEST Foundry and E-Waste Holding Centre is expected to play a key role in supporting industrial development, recycling, and sustainable management of electronic waste in Ghana once fully operational.
