‘Threats from people like Abronye forced me to get a bodyguard’ – Judge claims

A Judge of the Adenta Circuit Court 1, Her Honour Angela Attachie, has revealed that threats, including those from people like the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, have forced her to seek protection from a bodyguard for her safety.

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Law Faculty Board of KAAF University on Monday, August 24, 2026, Justice Attachie disclosed that the Judicial Council provided her with security. However, circuit court judges are not ordinarily entitled to personal protection under existing rules.

“I’m a circuit court judge. Under our rules, I’m not entitled to one, but I have one now because of the threats from people like Abronye and stuff like that, who has never even been to my court, whose case I have never tried,” she said.

The judge explained that she has repeatedly faced attacks and hostile comments over her rulings, particularly from lawyers who are also politicians.

“I have been at the receiving end of some of these comments. Every time I make orders, people have issues with it. And so because of that, I have a bodyguard,” she stated.

Justice Attachie cautioned lawyers against publicly attacking judges over court decisions, warning that such conduct threatens the rule of law.

She further urged those who disagree with rulings to use established legal procedures, including appeals to higher courts, rather than resorting to public criticism or threats.

She also stressed the human impact of the threats, stating that it is not the best.

“You don’t come to the court and come and command the judge to do as you please. The judge is the referee, and so once a decision is made, if you are not happy with what I am doing, you appeal.

“…You go to the higher court, you go to the High Court, you go to the Court of Appeal, and then if they agree with you, they will change my decision but making threats to our lives… it’s not the best we are family people too,” she added.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Governing Council of KAAF University, Professor Omane Antwi, emphasised the importance of legal education that produces lawyers combining professional competence with strong ethical values.

He noted that ethics had been incorporated into the university’s law programme amid concerns about public trust in the legal profession.
