The Ga Traditional Council, under the leadership of HRM King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Ga Mantse, membership of the Council and Eminent Ga Personalities today held a constructive meeting with the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to discuss matters relating to language policy, cultural preservation, and the proposed integration of artificial intelligence language tools into Ghana’s education system.
After extensive deliberations, the Ga Traditional Council issues the following communiqué:
- Affirmation of Indigenous Language Rights: The Ga State emphasized that Ga and Dangme are the indigenous languages of the capital and must be accorded full recognition and protection within the national education framework.
- Compulsory Teaching of Ga and Dangme in Greater Accra: The Ga State
requested that Ga and Dangme be made compulsory subjects across all basic schools’ curricula within the Greater Accra Region, ensuring that the linguistic heritage of the capital is preserved and transmitted to future generations. - Inclusion of Ga in the National AI Language Pilot: The Ga State called for the immediate inclusion of the Ga language in the proposed AI language development collaboration with Google, alongside Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani. The exclusion of the Ga language from this initiative was noted as unacceptable for a language central to the identity of the capital.
- Government Commitment to Protect and Promote the Ga Language: The Ga State requested a clear and intentional commitment from the Government of Ghana to safeguard, promote, and modernise the Ga language through policy, investment, and technological development.
- Posting of Ga and Dangme Language Teachers Within Greater Accra: The Ga State urged the Ministry to ensure that all Ga and Dangme language graduates from Winneba and other Colleges of Education and universities are posted within the Greater Accra Region upon completion of their training, to guarantee adequate staffing for effective language instruction.
- Development of a Ga–Dangme Language Policy Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) The Ga State proposed the drafting and signing of a
dedicated MoU between the Ministry of Education and the Ga State, outlining a long-term policy direction for the teaching, promotion, and digital development of Ga and Dangme. - Legal and Administrative Framework for Implementation: The Ga Traditional Council expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service to establish a legal and administrative framework that will guide the MoU and
ensure accountability, continuity, and measurable progress. - Commitment to Continued Dialogue: Both parties acknowledged the importance of ongoing engagement and agreed to maintain open channels of communication to support the successful implementation of these commitments.
The Ga State reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding the cultural and linguistic heritage of the capital and looks forward to a productive partnership with the Ministry of
Education.
