The Member of Parliament for the Kpone–Katamanso Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, , has attributed the area’s persistent development challenges to rapid population growth coupled with inadequate infrastructure, describing the constituency as one of the most pressured in the country.
Speaking in an interview on Class 91.3 FM, the MP cited data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census, which indicates that Kpone–Katamanso has an estimated population of about 417,000 people, making it the most populous single constituency in Ghana.
He explained that while cities such as Kumasi and Tamale record higher population figures, they are divided into multiple constituencies, unlike Kpone–Katamanso, which remains a single constituency within one district.
He further noted that the constituency has nearly double the population of Ashaiman, which has about 206,000 residents, placing immense pressure on social services and public infrastructure.
Mr. Tettey said the constituency spans a vast area, stretching from Pum through Katamanso, Oyibi, Zenu, Sebrepor, Bethlehem, Beechley, Takasuna, Apollonia, East Legon Hills, and up to Ube-Krum, extending beyond the Dodowa Road towards Bonte and Gonte.
According to him, the rapid growth of high-income residential areas such as East Legon Hills has further intensified challenges related to land use, infrastructure provision, and service delivery.
He explained that population growth has far outpaced development, resulting in major deficits in roads, education, healthcare, water supply, and land administration.
Complaints from residents, he said, are frequent, particularly over poor road conditions, water shortages, and land disputes, including instances of multiple sales of the same land.
The MP acknowledged that these challenges existed before he contested the parliamentary seat, but said his efforts to address them were constrained between 2021 and 2025 when he served as an opposition MP.
He noted that concerns he raised in Parliament, especially on roads and water, did not always receive prompt attention.
He expressed optimism that the situation has improved, stating that with his party now in government, there is renewed opportunity to tackle the constituency’s long-standing development issues.
On road infrastructure, Mr. Tettey disclosed that Kpone–Katamanso has an estimated road network of about 2,400 kilometres, with less than two per cent paved.
He said that after assuming office, he engaged engineers from the Department of Urban Roads in January and discovered that many roads in the constituency had already been captured in official records since 2023, but were not acted upon due to the lack of follow-ups.
According to him, sustained engagement with road authorities has yielded results, with about seven road contracts awarded across the constituency.
He said three contractors are currently working within the Pum enclave, including roads linking Pum, Prampram, and nearby communities.
Ongoing works include the Pum Junction–Pum Township road, routes from the Tumba area towards Pum, and the lagoon crossing linking Pum to Prampram.
He added that roads serving Bethlehem, Gulf City, Accra Road, and Afite Agoro have been awarded to Black Oak Developers, while roads around Sebrepor and the Deacon area have been assigned to Yogo Terrano, with site assessments already completed.
Major arterial roads linking Oyibi, Israel, Apollonia, Okusible, and the Amasaman Road are also under construction, with contractors already deployed.
In addition, the Santor–Ashaiman main road is currently undergoing active construction.
The MP noted that development is being carried out in phases and appealed to residents to be patient, explaining that it is not feasible to undertake all projects simultaneously.
He assured constituents that additional communities, including Beechley, Washington, and the New York areas, have been earmarked for future road contracts.
Mr, Tettey expressed confidence that by the end of the year, most major roads in the constituency would see significant improvement, reaffirming his commitment to inclusive development and sustained efforts to address the area’s infrastructure challenges.
