The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana have expressed shock and disappointment over recent comments made by the Transport Minister.
According to the Minister, the government is procuring buses to “collapse” the private transport business.
In a press release dated February 5, 2026, the unions described the Minister’s statement as unacceptable and ungrateful.
They noted that while they continue to battle unapproved fares and short-distance loading, the Minister failed to commend their efforts and instead chose to throw tantrums at them.
The unions have urged the Minister to retract his statement and work with them to develop Ghana’s transport sector.
They also questioned the Minister’s commitment to his post, suggesting that if he is tired of his role, he should alert them.
The press release was signed by Samuel Amoah, National Deputy Public Relations Officer of GPRTU of TUC, David Agboado, Second Deputy Public Relations Officer, Asonaba Nana Wiredu, National Acting Chairman of Commercial Transport Operators Ghana, and Yaw Barimah, National Public Relations Officer of True Drivers/Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana.
The unions’ reaction highlights the ongoing tensions between the government and private transport operators in Ghana.
The operators have long been complaining about the challenges they face in the sector, including unapproved fares and short-distance loading.
The government’s plan to procure buses to “collapse” the private transport business has been met with resistance from the unions, who argue that this will further exacerbate the challenges they face.
