The Volta Regional Police Command has intercepted a Nigerian-bound vehicle loaded with suspected narcotics valued at over one million Ghana cedis, in a major anti-drug operation carried out on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
According to an unimpeachable source, the operation was mounted following actionable intelligence received by the Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Wisdom Akorli, who sanctioned the deployment of a joint taskforce to intercept the vehicle.
The taskforce comprised officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), and four personnel from the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
At about 6:30pm, a black Liberty Jeep, registered in Nigeria with registration number FKJ 692 KF, was stopped at the Kpotame barrier along the Ada Junction (Kasseh)–Sogakope stretch of the transcontinental highway.
A thorough search of the vehicle, driven by 46-year-old Charles Adenkule, led to the discovery of ten parcels of compressed substances suspected to be cocaine, with an estimated street value of GH¢1,032,650. In addition, about half a kilogram of compressed dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp, was found concealed behind the vehicle’s inner lining.

Police sources indicated that it remains unclear whether the illicit drugs originated from Ghana or whether the country was being used as a transit route to another destination.
Upon realising that he had been busted, the suspect allegedly offered the arresting officers a bribe of $20,000 in an attempt to secure his release. The officers, however, rejected the offer outright, demonstrating what police sources described as a resolute commitment to combating drug trafficking and corruption.
The suspect is currently in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations, while the Liberty Jeep has been impounded at the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho.
The seized substances are expected to be sent to the forensic laboratory for scientific analysis and confirmation.
The successful operation underscores the Volta Regional Police Command’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking along the transcontinental highway and reinforces the service’s reputation for professionalism and integrity in the face of inducement.
