The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says 34 people have died nationwide following the floods that struck on Monday, June 29, with the death toll expected to rise as search and recovery operations continue.
Speaking in an interview on TV3 on Thursday, July 2, NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo Yartey, said 12 of the deaths were recorded in Accra, while the remaining 22 occurred in other flood-affected parts of the country.
He explained that the number of fatalities could increase as officials reconcile reports of missing persons with recovered bodies.
“The death toll in Accra is 12, across the country is 34 but it could go up. If we did the matching and realise that some of the people missing have been found dead, then the death toll will increase and those listed as missing will reduce,” he said.
Mr Amo Yartey said NADMO teams remain on the ground searching for missing persons and supporting affected communities.
He added that relief items are being distributed across the country to displaced victims.
“As I speak to you now the warehouse is busy moving supplies to the distressed. Relief is across the country, we are going to send relief everywhere,” he said.
According to NADMO, the floods affected seven regions and displaced 89,736 people. The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of displaced persons, with 54,712, followed by the Central Region with 21,882.
The Volta Region recorded 8,534 displaced persons, the Western Region 2,020, the Ashanti Region 1,461, the Western North Region 937, and the Eastern Region 190, all in Abuakwa South.
NADMO said search, recovery and relief operations are continuing in all affected areas.
