Korle Bu Management seeks clarification on video by Mzbel over alleged ‘no-bed’ death

The Management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has requested clarification regarding a video circulating on social media published by Ghanaian musician Mzbel.  In the viral video, she suggests that her relative passed away as a result of the unavailability of a bed at the hospital.

In a news release issued on 7th July 2026, the hospital management assured the public that all allegations concerning patient care are treated with the utmost seriousness.

KBTH noted that since becoming aware of the publication, every effort has been made to establish contact with Mzbel and her family to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Specifically, the hospital seeks to determine whether the deceased was officially referred to KBTH and denied admission upon arrival, or whether the patient had not yet been transferred to the facility and was instead advised to await the availability of a bed.

At the time of issuing the notice, the hospital had not yet been able to engage the family directly to verify the facts. Management is formally calling on Mzbel to provide the necessary information to enable a thorough investigation into the claims made in her video.

    Policy on Emergency Admissions

For the avoidance of doubt, KBTH management highlighted existing directives regarding emergency care. Following a directive issued by President John Mahama during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), no public hospital is permitted to refuse an emergency case. This policy was subsequently reinforced by the Minister for Health.

In line with these directives, the Board and Management of Korle Bu stated they have acquired additional beds and other facilities to ease the incidence of bed unavailability in the hospital.

Management added that it has consistently reminded all clinical and emergency departments of their obligation to provide emergency care in accordance with national policy, noting that any deliberate refusal to attend to an emergency patient is regarded as a serious breach of established policy and will be investigated thoroughly.

    Complaints Channels

While investigations into the matter continue, management reminded patients and their relatives that the hospital has established accessible channels for lodging complaints. These include:

    – The hospital’s telephone exchange

    – Direct calls to 0244 406 700

    – The complaints portal on the hospital’s website (www.kbth.gov.gh)

    – The QR code displayed throughout the hospital for lodging complaints

The statement concluded with the management extending its sincere condolences to the bereaved family and reiterating its commitment to establishing the facts surrounding the incident in a fair, transparent, and professional manner.

    Background

The statement from the hospital follows an emotional video shared on social media on Sunday, July 5, 2026, by the singer Mzbel.

In the video, she announced the passing of her 46-year-old sister, Leila, claiming she died after being rushed to the facility in critical condition and being told there were no available beds for admission.

The Hiplife star questioned the persistence of healthcare infrastructure challenges and bed shortages at the nation’s largest referral hospital, sparking widespread public discussion regarding the so called “no-bed syndrome” in Ghanaian public healthcare facilities.
