Renowned legal scholar and governance advocate, Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare, popularly known as Kwaku Azar, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) reaction to the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) investigation into former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), Dennis Edward Aboagye, popularly known as Miracles.
In a post on social media, Prof. Asare argued that the priority should be ensuring the recovery of any public funds found to have been misappropriated, rather than framing the matter in political terms.
According to him, the focus of public discourse should be on accountability and the protection of state resources.
“EOCO says ₵55M has been looted. Your reaction isn’t, ‘Recover every pesewa.’ Rather, it’s, ‘One day the tables will turn.’ Wei! Da Yie!” he wrote.
His comments come after EOCO announced on Monday, July 13, that it had launched investigations into Mr. Aboagye and former IMCCoD Accountant Gerald Appiah following a forensic audit and a petition submitted by the Secretariat’s current Executive Secretary.
The anti-graft agency said the probe relates to alleged financial and procurement irregularities involving approximately GH¢55 million.
According to EOCO, the suspects are being investigated for alleged offences including conspiracy to steal, stealing, using public office for profit, causing financial loss to the state, dissipation of public funds, defrauding by false pretences, money laundering and other related offences.
The investigations remain ongoing, with EOCO maintaining that all suspects will be afforded their constitutional rights while the case is being pursued.
