Concerned customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, have planned to stage a peaceful demonstration against the company on September 1, 2026.
The customers would protest what they described as persistent over-billing, estimated bills and delays in resolving faulty meters.
The demonstration, according to organisers, is aimed at drawing attention to concerns over what they consider unfair and inaccurate electricity billing practices, and the difficulties customers face in getting their complaints addressed by the utility company.
Mr Edem Mensah Viglo, the convener of the group told the Ghana News Agency (GNA)in an interview that, the situation has affected customers who have endured outrageous, estimated bills issued without actual meter readings, unexplained overcharging, delayed replacement or repair of faulty meters, and inadequate responses whenever complaints are lodged with ECG.
“Our demonstration is under the theme “Enough Is Enough! Stop the Over-Billing Now!: we are calling for immediate action to ensure that electricity bills are based strictly on accurate meter readings, for those who have been wrongly charged to receive appropriate adjustments to their accounts,” he said.
Mr Viglo emphasised that the concern youth are demanding greater transparency and accountability from ECG in its billing processes, as well as respect for the fundamental rights of electricity consumers within the Municipality.
He said the peaceful demonstration would begin at the Denu Junction, from where participants would proceed through the Ketu South Municipality Assembly to the ECG Office in Denu to formally register their grievances to officials of the company.
Mr Viglo said: “The over-billing had led to the collapse of many personal businesses in the area; it has also contributed to a rise in the unemployment rate within the Municipality, since many cannot afford the high bills by ECG.”
He said the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, the ECG and other relevant authorities had previously been notified about the situation, but no meaningful action had been taken to resolve the concerns raised by residents.
Mr Viglo cited instances of households billed for electricity despite having been disconnected for months, as well as homes with minimal appliances, such as a single bulb, being billed between GHS2,000 and GHS5,000, with some customers billed close to GHS20,000 within a few months.
He said security agencies have been notified about the said demonstration to help maintain peace and order during the exercise.
The organisers have called on all concerned citizens, electricity consumers and residents of the Ketu South Municipality to turn out in their numbers and participate peacefully in the demonstration which would not be merely about electricity bills but about justice, dignity, accountability and the protection of consumer rights, while urging participants to remain orderly throughout the exercise.
Meanwhile, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has announced plans for an independent investigation into complaints of alleged overbilling and faulty electricity meters in some communities in the Volta Region including Keta.
The investigation, he said, would be conducted by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission, following complaints raised by residents against the power distribution company.
