The Department of Urban Roads has revealed that it has modified its earlier plans for the Tema Community 3 to Black Star Square Road project.
The initial plan would have required the demolition of several structures along the 28th February Road, which is being expanded into a dual carriageway.
The affected structures include historic homes in Osu linked to Ghana’s colonial history and the identity of the Osu community, including Richter Fort, also known as Richter House, Lokko House and Reindorf House.
The proposed demolitions were met with opposition from property owners.
Speaking to Citi News, Public Relations Officer of the Department of Urban Roads, Isaac Adjei Kwakye, said the department had taken the concerns into consideration and modified the earlier plans, urging affected property owners to remain calm.
“We’re conscious that we deliver the project, but we’re also conscious that we protect our cultural heritage. Among the properties that received special consideration are the Lokko House, Reindorf House, Richter House and Brown’s property. All these are structures that have been identified, and the review has taken place.
“Under the modified plan, the initial 35-metre width expansion of the stretch has been reduced to 25 metres, while sections involving cultural heritage structures will be reduced to 18 metres to minimise the impact.”
The Department of Urban Roads also indicated that it had collaborated with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board to advise on how the road expansion can be carried out without affecting the historic buildings.
