Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Matilda Asante-Asiedu, has replaced the central bank’s Governor, Dr Johnson Asiamah, on the governing board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
GoldBod said Dr Asiamah, in a letter dated May 11, nominated Mrs Asante-Asiedu to represent him on the board due to his busy schedule.
“The Governor simply opted to nominate his second deputy to represent him on the governing Board of the GoldBod,” the statement said.
This follows the Governor’s revelation at the Bank of Ghana’s 132nd Monetary Policy Committee meeting on September 24 that he had resigned from the GoldBod board about five months earlier.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 28, GoldBod noted that the arrangement is permitted under Section 4(e) of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which provides for the Governor of the Bank of Ghana or a representative of the Governor not below the rank of a director to serve on the board.
GoldBod explained that similar arrangements have been made by other government officials who are members of its governing board.
GoldBod Media Relations Officer, Prince Kwame Minkah, who signed the statement, said the Governor’s decision does not indicate any wrongdoing at the institution or a disagreement between the BoG and GoldBod.
“The fact that Dr Asiamah no longer sits on the Board of the GoldBod, does not mean that there is any ongoing rot at the GoldBod. Neither is there any fight between the BoG and the GoldBod,” he said.
The development comes amid public discussion over the relationship between the BoG and GoldBod, particularly following concerns raised about the central bank’s financing of GoldBod’s domestic gold purchase operations.
The BoG ended its pre-financing arrangement for GoldBod’s domestic gold purchases effective July 1, 2026, as the financing of the programme was moved away from the central bank.
GoldBod, however, maintained that it continues to work closely with the BoG, describing the institution as a key anchor of Ghana’s foreign exchange generation.
It urged the public to disregard suggestions that Dr Asiamah’s departure from the board was connected to problems within GoldBod or a breakdown in relations between the two institutions.
