Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has clarified that his position as Governor does not require him to personally serve on the board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
According to Dr Asiama, the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), only requires the central bank to have representation on the GoldBod Board. The law, he explained, gives the Bank of Ghana the option of appointing either the Governor or another senior official to serve in that capacity.
Dr Asiama disclosed that he stepped down from the GoldBod Board several months ago and has since stopped participating in its meetings.
“I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the GoldBod at all,” he told journalists.
His clarification comes after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) questioned his continued association with the GoldBod Board, arguing that his dual roles could raise concerns about a potential conflict of interest.
Former Finance Minister and NPP Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, raised the issue at an NPP press briefing on September 1.
The party’s concerns are linked to the financial relationship between the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod, including the central bank’s role in supporting GoldBod’s gold-purchasing activities and reported losses connected to the domestic gold purchase programme.
Dr Asiama, however, pointed to the provisions of Act 1140, saying the legislation does not make the Governor’s personal membership of the GoldBod Board compulsory.
He explained that another official at or above the required seniority may instead represent the Bank of Ghana.
“The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director,” he said.
“It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there.”
The Governor’s comments seek to distinguish the Bank of Ghana’s statutory representation on the GoldBod Board from his personal participation, which he says ended several months ago.
