The Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has announced significant progress in Ghana’s national flood control efforts, revealing that 90,000 cubic metres of sediment have been dredged from the Odaw Channel to improve drainage capacity and reduce flood risks.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 28, the Minister provided an update on the ministry’s interventions under the National Flood Control Programme, which spans 2020, 2023, and 2024, highlighting the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of drains across multiple regions as key measures to strengthen flood resilience.
“These works have contributed significantly to improving the capacity of drainage systems, thereby reducing flood risk in identified hotspots,” the Minister said. He added that approximately 1.7 kilometres of storm drains had been constructed as of December 2025.
The Minister also outlined progress under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
As part of the initiative, dredging operations are being conducted along the Odaw River from Caprice to Circle in the Greater Accra Region.
These efforts are part of the government’s broader strategy to mitigate flooding in urban areas, particularly in Greater Accra, where heavy rains have historically caused severe disruptions.
