The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to relocate traders affected by the ongoing decongestion exercise to the nearly completed Salaga Market and the proposed 24-Hour Market once construction works are finalised.
Accra Mayor Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey disclosed this while addressing the media on Monday, February 9, urging traders operating within the Central Business District to continue selling their goods behind the red demarcation lines until the designated markets are ready for occupation.
“We are working on the Salaga Market, and the roofing has been completed. The contractor is making good progress. Other markets, including the 24-hour market, have also been awarded on contract,” he said.
He explained that the completion of these facilities will provide adequate and organised trading spaces, enabling the Assembly to permanently relocate traders from unauthorised areas and ease congestion on the streets of Accra.
“All these measures will ensure that traders are properly accommodated and that trading activities are moved off the streets to improve order and safety in the city,” the Mayor stated.
On a different initiative, the Mayor disclosed plans to address infrastructure challenges in public basic schools across the metropolis.
The project, he said, will be funded through the Assembly’s internally generated funds, with construction works expected to begin within a month.AMA
