The Ablekuma West Municipal Chief Executive, George Kpakpo Allotey, has described as “unfortunate and deeply troubling” the alleged baby theft at the Mamprobi Polyclinic in the Greater Accra region, as the suspect remains in custody.
In an interview with Citi News on Friday, February 20, the MCE strongly condemned the incident, stressing that no circumstance can justify attempting to take a newborn from its mother.
The suspect, Latifa Salifu, has been remanded into police custody for 14 days by an Accra High Court as investigations continue. She is expected to reappear before the court on March 4, 2026.
Mr Allotey expressed empathy for both families and said he was grateful that the baby had been found and safely reunited with the mother.
The Municipal Chief Executive also called for tighter security measures at health facilities, including the installation of CCTV cameras, proper tagging of newborns, stricter checks at hospital entry and exit points to prevent similar incidents.
He maintained that authorities are capable of handling the matter and urged hospital management and security personnel to heighten vigilance to safeguard patients and property.
“It is unfortunate. We also heard that this woman has been there for a while trying to conceive and give birth to her own child, and that has been difficult for her. But that is not to justify what she has done. It is wrong,” he said.
