Ghana’s Minister of Health Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has visited the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, emphasising the need for quality care and discipline among health professionals. The minister stressed that patients should not be turned away, especially in emergency cases, and that health facilities should stabilise patients before referring them to other hospitals.
According to the Minister, the hospital has added 200 beds to increase capacity.
The government is establishing a command centre to coordinate emergency services. A bill is being drafted to penalise health professionals who turn away patients in emergency cases.
The minister has tasked his deputy to implement recommendations from a report on medical collaborative issues.
The minister also commended the hospital staff for their efforts, saying, “I am exceedingly happy about the response you have given.” He emphasised the importance of discipline in the health sector, stating that “there must be discipline in the sector.”
The Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, has highlighted the hospital’s efforts to improve emergency care services. Speaking during a visit by the Minister of Health, Dr. Adam said the hospital has extended its Outpatient Department (OPD) hours to 10 p.m. to accommodate more patients.
He said, The hospital has made available a new ward to absorb neurosurgical cases, reducing pressure on the emergency centre.
The medical department is being resourced with more beds to handle increased cases.
The hospital is addressing equipment wear and tear through routine maintenance and procurement.
Dr. Adam appreciated the Minister’s visit, saying it shows a commitment to improving healthcare services. He noted that the hospital is doing its best to serve patients despite challenges.
