Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has formally engaged South African authorities following renewed concerns over attacks on foreign nationals.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, April 23, Ablakwa disclosed that he summoned the Acting South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Thando Dalamba, to address the situation.

“At the meeting, I conveyed the Government of Ghana’s strong condemnation of the continuous xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians and other Africans living in South Africa,” he stated.

He urged South African authorities to act to protect those affected.

“We are urging South African authorities to take decisive action in protecting the human rights and dignity of our nationals and all Africans,” he said.

The minister also called for swift investigations into recent incidents and accountability for those responsible.

“Ghana equally expects that the promised investigations be expedited and all perpetrators punished to serve as adequate deterrence,” he added.

According to him, further steps by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be communicated in due course.

The development follows renewed tensions in South Africa involving foreign nationals, particularly from Ghana and Nigeria. A viral video showing a Ghanaian being confronted by a group of locals heightened concerns and contributed to the diplomatic engagement.
