At least 85 residents have been severely affected following a controlled spillage from the Weija Dam, which triggered flooding in several communities within the Weija enclave in the Greater Accra Region.
The spillage, carried out as part of routine dam management operations, caused water levels downstream to rise and overflow into nearby homes, displacing families and disrupting daily activities.
Authorities say the decision to open all five spill gates was necessary to manage increasing inflows into the dam and protect its structural integrity.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Thursday, May 28, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Dennis Nartey Adjannor, said officials are closely monitoring the water levels and may adjust the gates further depending on the situation in the coming hours.
He disclosed that affected residents have since been relocated to designated safe havens.
According to him, three shelters have been identified, with two churches situated on higher ground currently accommodating displaced persons.
Mr. Adjannor said the 85 affected residents include 33 women and several children, adding that relief items have been distributed to support them.
He further noted that local authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive, as well as some benevolent organisations, have stepped in to provide assistance to the affected communities.
“As of now, the recorded people we have at our safe haven are 85 and out of these 85, we have 33 women, and then the rest are children…We have not recorded any casualty yet, and we hope we are not going to record any,” he added.
