The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to extend its ongoing decongestion exercise beyond the Central Business District (CBD) to other parts of the Greater Accra Region.
The month-long operation, which began in the CBD on Monday, February 2, is aimed at clearing traders from pavements to ensure the free movement of pedestrians and improve public safety.
Speaking to the media, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey, said the exercise would be carried out in collaboration with other municipal and district assemblies in the region.
According to him, the enforcement drive is a coordinated regional effort to ensure compliance with laws governing the use of public spaces.
“We are going to enforce the law, and the law will work. This exercise is comprehensive and will continue at Kaneshie. I am working with my colleagues at Abossey Okai, Ayawaso Central, Labadi and Korley Klottey. We are all working together as a team,” he said.
Mr Allotey stressed that the decongestion exercise was not limited to Accra Metro, indicating that operations would be rolled out in several locations in the coming days.
“This is not just an Accra Metropolitan decongestion. Tomorrow we are going to Agbogbloshie, and the next day we will go to Kaneshie,” he added.CitiNewsRoom
