    Ghana football loses icon: Peter Lamptey passes away, family formally inform GFA

    The family of the late Peter Lamptey has formally notified the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of the passing of the revered former footballer.
    Fo an ndly remembered as the Goal Thief, Lamptey was a legendary figure in Ghanaian football and a celebrated former Black Stars striker. He passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the Kaneshie Polyclinic, Accra.
    On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, members of his family paid a courtesy visit to GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku and the association’s Executive Council at the GFA headquarters to officially convey the news.
    President Simeon-Okraku, speaking on behalf of the Executive Council and the wider Ghana football fraternity, expressed profound condolences to the bereaved family. He paid glowing tribute to Lamptey’s outstanding contributions to Ghanaian football, describing his legacy as enduring and deeply impactful.
    As preparations begin to accord the late football icon a befitting burial, Executive Council member Nana Sarfo Odurohas been mandated to lead engagement discussions with the family on behalf of the GFA.
    During his illustrious club career, Peter Lamptey was a key figure at Hearts of Oak, where he formed a formidable attacking partnership with some of the nation’s finest players, including Mohammed Polo, Anas Seidu, Mama Acquah, and Robert Hammond. He also enjoyed a notable spell with Accra Great Olympics.
    On the international stage, Lamptey represented Ghana at several major tournaments, most notably featuring at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
    His decorated career saw him win five Ghana Premier League titles and three GFA Cup trophies. He also emerged as the top scorer in the 1973 league season, a feat that firmly established him as one of the most lethal forwards in Ghana’s football history.
