In a swift response to a distress call, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested six individuals suspected of operating as land guards and found to be in possession of firearms.

The operation was conducted on Saturday, January 10, 2026, around 12:50 PM. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific location of the arrest or detailed the circumstances that led to the distress call.

Context: The Persistent Land Guard Menace
While specific details of this latest arrest are still emerging, the incident fits an ongoing pattern of land-related conflict in the Greater Accra Region. Land guards are individuals or groups who use intimidation and violence to seize or control land, often for illegal sale or to extort money from legitimate developers and residents.

    · A Widespread Problem: Similar police operations have been necessary in other areas. For instance, in July 2025, a specialized Anti-Landguard Unit arrested ten notorious land guards who were terrorizing residents of Ashongman Estates, destroying property and making illegal land claims.
    · High-Level Connections Alleged: Some cases suggest complex networks. In a separate October 2025 incident, a real estate company formally accused a police officer of acting as a land guard, alleging he used his authority to aid in land grabbing.
    · Legal Framework: Those arrested in such operations are typically charged under the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), which provides a legal basis for prosecuting these activities.

    Ongoing Investigations and Public Appeal
The six suspects are currently in police custody. The Greater Accra Regional Police Command is expected to continue its investigation, which may include determining if the suspects are part of a larger syndicate or linked to other pending land cases.

The police consistently urge the public to report any information on land guard activities or other crimes to the nearest police station to aid in these efforts.
