Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has assured Ghanaians that the proposed rebranding of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport will not be as costly as some fear, citing Accra’s strong global recognition.
Addressing concerns over the financial implications of the name change, Mr. Nikpe explained on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show that while the exercise will come with some cost, it is significantly cheaper than introducing an entirely new brand.
“In terms of expenses, any project has to start somewhere, and when it involves history, there will inevitably be costs. If you are rebranding a name that is not widely recognised, you may spend significantly more. However, ‘Accra’ is a name known globally,” he explained.
The Minister expressed confidence that majority of Ghanaians support the move, describing it as an effort to correct the historical record rather than erase individual contributions.
He added that government is simultaneously focused on expanding airport infrastructure, including the construction of a Hajj village to ease congestion and improve passenger experience.
Mr. Nikpe emphasized that Parliament will ultimately determine the fate of the bill, urging lawmakers to carefully examine the proposal in light of Ghana’s historical identity.
“Our engagement with Parliament is crucial to restoring the airport’s original name, as this history is important to us as Ghanaians,” he said.
