President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as Minister for Defence marks a return to a portfolio he is already familiar with, having previously served at the ministry during the President’s first term.

Mr Adjei, who was Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, has been reassigned to take over from the late Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, who died in the August 6, 2025 military helicopter crash.

The appointment comes after Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson supervised the Defence Ministry in an acting capacity for nearly a year following Dr Omane Boamah’s death.

If approved by Parliament, Mr Adjei will resume leadership of a ministry where he previously served as Deputy Minister for Defence between 2015 and 2016.

His earlier role gave him exposure to Ghana’s defence administration, military operations and policy discussions at a time when the country was responding to emerging security challenges within the sub-region.

Beyond his government experience, Mr Adjei has academic training in areas closely linked to national security. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Peace, Security and Intelligence Management from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where he was recognised as the best graduating student in his class in 2022.

The programme equipped him with knowledge in security strategy, intelligence coordination, conflict management and policy development — areas central to the responsibilities of a Defence Minister.

He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and an Executive MBA from the University of Ghana.

Before his latest reassignment, Mr Adjei served as Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, a role he assumed in February 2025. During his tenure, he was responsible for government interventions in housing delivery, water management and public infrastructure development.

His move to the Defence Ministry places him at the helm of one of the country’s most sensitive portfolios, amid regional security concerns and ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity and readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Mr Adjei’s nomination also completes the search for a substantive Defence Minister following the death of Dr Omane Boamah, who was among eight people killed when a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crashed while on official duty.

Dr Omane Boamah was regarded as a close ally of President Mahama and a key figure in the administration. His death left the Defence Ministry under temporary supervision as government prepared to appoint a permanent successor.

With his previous experience at the ministry and specialised background in security and intelligence management, Mr Adjei is expected to bring continuity and institutional knowledge to the Defence portfolio, subject to approval by Parliament.
