The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been compelled to remove Mahama Ayariga as Majority Leader in Parliament.
The party will have to elect a new leader following a communiqué signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
The communiqué read that Mahama Ayariga has been reassigned by President John Mahama to head the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Together with Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings who has been appointed to Environment, Science and Technology Ministry and others, the President’s announcement read that “President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 78(1), submitted the names” to Parliament “through the Speaker, for prior approval as Ministers of State”.
The appointment which has been submitted to Parliament awaiting approval suggests Mr. Ayariga may not function as the leader of the NDC in Parliament, hence a new person would have to lead the caucus.
This notwithstanding, there is currently no official report from the party indicating Ayariga’s removal nor the name of a nominee being announced.
