The Russian Ambassador to Ghana, Sergei Berdnikov, has stated that his country is unable confirm the nationality of a man accused of unlawfully publishing intimate videos of Ghanaian women.

A statement issued on Tuesday, February 17, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the ambassador was summoned on the instructions of the Foreign Affairs Minister to register government’s protest over the alleged conduct.

The Ministry said the summons was to formally express Ghana’s displeasure and seek Russia’s cooperation in pursuing justice.

According to the Ministry, Ambassador Berdnikov acknowledged the violation of the privacy and dignity of the victims and the cybercrime implications of the matter.

However, he indicated that he could not verify the nationality of the individual involved.

“The Russian Ambassador, however, indicated that he is unable to confirm the Russian nationality of the individual at the centre of the intimate viral videos, and further disclosed that the purported name making the rounds in the media is not a known Russian name and rather represents an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language,” the statement noted.

The ambassador further revealed that similar activities by the individual in other countries had come to the attention of Russian authorities and were being investigated by Russian experts.

He also pledged the Embassy’s readiness to share information to support Ghana’s efforts to apprehend the suspect, despite the absence of a legally binding extradition treaty between the two countries.

The suspect, reportedly in his 30s, is alleged to have travelled to Ghana and secretly recorded his interactions with women using concealed equipment.

Reports claim he used camera-fitted sunglasses to capture the videos and later shared them on social media, triggering public outrage over privacy breaches and digital exploitation.
