The Ministry of Health has directed all health facilities nationwide to immediately strengthen security measures following a recent baby theft incident at the Mamprobi Polyclinic.

In a press release issued on February 18, the ministry commended the swift and coordinated response of the Ghana Police Service, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection Ghana, other stakeholders, and a whistleblower whose actions helped bring attention to the case.

As part of immediate steps, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has instructed the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, to enforce strict day-and-night security protocols across all public and private health institutions. Facility administrators have been ordered to urgently review and reinforce their internal safety procedures.

The ministry also reiterated an earlier government directive requiring the installation and proper functioning of CCTV surveillance systems in health facilities nationwide to improve monitoring and deter criminal activity.

Authorities stressed that the measures are aimed at safeguarding patients, especially vulnerable groups such as newborns, while strengthening accountability within the healthcare system.

“The Government remains firmly committed to protecting patients and ensuring safety across our health facilities,” the statement assured, while urging the public to remain calm as investigations continue.

The release was issued by Isaac Ofei Baah, Head of the Public Relations Unit at the Ministry of Health.

The ministry says the enhanced security framework forms part of broader efforts to restore public confidence and prevent similar incidents in hospitals and clinics across the country.
