The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun installing new public waste bins across parts of the Central Business District (CBD) in a renewed effort to improve sanitation and encourage proper waste disposal.
The exercise follows a donation of 20 waste bins by Duraplast on March 17, 2026, aimed at supporting the Assembly’s broader strategy to strengthen waste management infrastructure in the capital.
The bins have been positioned along the busy Kinbu to CMB corridor, an area known for intense commercial activity and high volumes of daily waste generation. Authorities say the locations were carefully selected to serve traders, commuters, and roadside operators.
Speaking during the rollout, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the Assembly would ensure consistent waste collection, with sanitation workers and trucks deployed daily to empty the bins and maintain cleanliness.
He cautioned residents against misusing the facility, stressing that the bins are strictly for public waste and not for household refuse. According to him, individuals who transport domestic waste into the bins risk arrest and prosecution under sanitation laws.
The Mayor also appealed to the public to support the initiative by adopting responsible waste disposal habits, noting that keeping the city clean requires collective responsibility. He further encouraged corporate organisations to partner with the Assembly to expand such interventions.
Earlier, Executive Director of Duraplast, Mireille Hitti, said the donation reflects the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and national development. She highlighted sanitation as a persistent challenge in Accra, stressing that improved infrastructure is key to promoting better waste management practices.
Ms. Hitti added that providing accessible disposal points would not only improve cleanliness but also contribute to public health and environmental protection. She called for stronger collaboration among residents, businesses, and stakeholders to sustain sanitation gains, while commending the AMA for its leadership in tackling the issue.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by city authorities to create a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
