Accra-Kumasi Expressway to complement existing highway – Agbodza

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has assured contractors that the government will complete all ongoing work on the Accra–Kumasi Highway despite plans for a new expressway between the two cities.

During a nationwide road inspection tour in the Eastern Region on May 11, 2026, Agbodza emphasised that the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway is intended to complement rather than replace the existing highway.

“The government plans to build a new road known as the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, which is not a substitute for the current Accra-Kumasi Highway. It is meant to complement that route,” he is quoted in a report by citinewsroom.com on May 11, 2026.

Agbodza explained that the expressway will operate on a commercial basis with tolls, providing faster travel for those willing to pay, while the existing highway will remain available for commuters seeking a more affordable option.

“For instance, this is an existing road. According to the ECOWAS convention we have signed, we need to construct expressways. However, when expressways are built, an alternative road must also be available since the expressways are intended for commercial use,” he noted.

“So, if someone wants to drive from Accra to Kumasi on the expressway and pay a toll—whether it be $10, $50, or whatever the cost may be—they can reach their destination in two hours. Alternatively, someone may choose to take the existing Accra-Kumasi Highway, which could take five or six hours. That is a choice for the individual,” he added.

The minister reassured everyone that the government is committed to completing ongoing work on both projects, stating that project could be delivered by the end of 2027 if everything stays on track.

“In any case, the expressway will also have tolls because it is an investment we are making. Let everyone in the country be assured that both projects are priorities for the government, and we are determined to complete them,” he added.

Agbodza also mentioned that discussions regarding costs and timelines with contractors have been finalised, with some projects expected to be completed ahead of schedule.
