The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey Santana, has touted the impact of the government’s Big Push infrastructure agenda on domestic tourism.
According to him, ongoing road projects linking key tourist destinations are expected to significantly improve access and increase patronage across the country.
He noted that several previously hard-to-reach sites will soon become more attractive to local travellers.
Speaking to the media over the weekend, the tourism advocate stressed the need to prioritise domestic tourism as a buffer against global shocks.
“The big push agenda… is the major investment that is leading to the tourism side in attractions… road infrastructure network construction is going on,” he said.
Abeiku Santana explained that improved road connectivity will reduce travel time to major tourism enclaves such as the Volta and Central regions and open up new economic opportunities for local communities.
He also pointed to increasing interest in domestic travel, especially during festive periods like Easter, citing how more Ghanaians are exploring local destinations.
“Domestic tourism awareness is increasing, and our domestic tourism product is evolving,” he noted.
He commended government efforts to position Ghana as a year-round tourism destination, noting that activities are no longer limited to the December festive season.
Abeiku Santana further indicated that sustained investment in infrastructure and destination development will help stabilise the sector and reduce over-reliance on international tourists.
