Public-spirited lawyer, Agambire M William Majeed, has urged the Government to deploy the buses it has procured to address the challenges urban dwellers face in commuting to and from work daily.
He noted that despite the government’s assurance to the public that issues with the urban transport system will be addressed following public outcry a few months ago, the issues have persisted with many commuters in urban centres, especially Accra, queuing for long hours at various bus stops to get commercial vehicles to and from their places of work.
Agambire M William Majeed chastised the government for deploying public relations (PR) tactics to respond to the issue when it came up and then failing subsequently to address it head-on by deploying extra buses to address the issue.
“Everyday I ask myself why we have a transport minister and why he draws salary at the expense of the ordinary Ghanaian every month if he cannot fix the intra-urban public transport system
A few months ago, there was so much crying about long queues at our bus terminals and the struggle to get ” trotro” to work.
As usual, so much PR was deployed in response to this problem that even national security deployed their men on our roads and trotro terminals with the promise that the government was importing some buses to resolve the challenge
Months later, the problem persists. As early as 4 am, people start queuing and later by 3pm the queues start again because everyone is in a rush to get home early,” he lamented.
He continued:” Some weeks ago, we were told that about 100 buses had arrived to ease the intra-urban public transport crisis, but we are yet to see a single bus on our roads
What kind of ineptitude is this one, too? Did the government/ transport minister import the buses for decoration or what?
Mr. Transport Minister, in case you don’t know, please, this thing is affecting productivity wai. Get the 100 buses into our cities and at least fear God and fix this problem.”
Ghana’s urban transport system remains poor, with the private sector dominating it with rickety buses. Normal railway systems are nearly non-existent, let alone advanced systems such as trams and sky trains.
