To address severe evening transportation shortages, the Ministry of Transport is launching an immediate emergency service on four major Accra routes starting today, December 10.

Commuters have faced months of difficulty securing affordable and reliable transport during peak hours, often encountering long waits and steep fare hikes. In response, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari announced a plan to redeploy long-distance buses for evening intra-city service.

“We will ensure that those buses are available at the peak hours to support our commuters who close from work to get home safely,”

    Bukari stated in Parliament.

    The Plan:

    · Routes: Accra–Madina–Adenta; Accra–Achimota–Amasaman; Accra–Mallam–Kasoa; Accra–Tema Beach Road.
    · Schedule: Daily from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
    · Initial Scale: A minimum of eight buses per route.
    · Goal: To improve safety, reduce wait times, and curb excessive fares. The Ministry aims to expand the number of buses in the coming weeks.

This initiative, coordinated with Intercity STC Coaches Limited, will utilize buses that return to Accra early from long-distance trips. The Minister emphasized this is an interim solution while broader, long-term reforms to the urban transport system are developed.
