The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed shock over the death of Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpongfollowing an armed attack on a team bus.
Frimpong, 20, died after sustaining gunshot wounds when armed men ambushed a bus carrying Berekum Chelsea FCplayers and officials as they returned from a Ghana Premier League match.
In a statement, the GFA described the player as a “promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” adding that it was in contact with the club and relevant authorities.
The association called for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and urged that “all necessary measures” be taken to address the situation.
The attack occurred after Berekum Chelsea’s match against Samartex FC in Samreboi, which the team lost 1-0. According to the club, armed men blocked the road and opened fire on the bus as the driver attempted to reverse, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes.
Police confirmed that Frimpong later died while receiving treatment and said a manhunt has been launched for the suspects. Security personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed to the area.
The GFA also indicated that it will review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling for domestic competitions to prevent similar incidents.
In a separate statement, the Ghana Premier League expressed support for Berekum Chelsea and called on security agencies to improve protection for teams travelling across the country.
Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January and had made 13 appearances, scoring two goals.
