Ghana and Panama have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formally commence bilateral political consultations and deepen cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his Panamanian counterpart, Javier Eduardo Martínez-Acha Vásquez.
The signing took place on the sidelines of the ongoing 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to Mr Ablakwa.
“I signed together with my counterpart, His Excellency Javier Eduardo Martínez-Acha Vásquez in the margins of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York,” Ablakwa said in a social media post on Monday, September 21.
He said the agreement would provide a structured framework for cooperation between Ghana and Panama, with particular focus on maritime affairs, cocoa production and trade.
The two countries are also expected to explore mutual technical assistance in the extractive sector under the new framework.
The signing forms part of Ghana’s broader diplomatic engagements on the margins of the UN General Assembly, where the country is seeking to strengthen bilateral and multilateral partnerships.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama is in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly, where he is expected to hold several sideline events on issues including reparatory justice.
