Ghanaian soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon who were injured during a recent incident in southern Lebanon are reported to be in stable condition and recovering, Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi has said
According to him, four soldiers who sustained minor injuries are receiving treatment and are responding well to medical care.
One soldier who suffered serious injuries to both legs and the hip was successfully evacuated to Beirut, where he underwent surgery.
Medical authorities say he is currently stable and recuperating.
The incident also resulted in the loss of personal belongings belonging to 15 officers after a fire outbreak at their accommodation facility.
In response to the development, the Government of Ghana has lodged a formal complaint at the United Nations headquarters, stressing the responsibility of parties involved in the conflict to respect the neutrality, safety and operational space of peacekeeping personnel.
Ghana also received expressions of solidarity from the French government.
Alice Rufo contacted Ghanaian authorities by telephone to convey support and indicated that France had similarly raised concerns at UN headquarters, as French peacekeepers are also deployed in Lebanon.
The Government of Ghana has expressed appreciation for the gesture and reiterated that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and protection of its troops serving under the United Nations flag.
