The government has declared Friday, 10th July and Saturday, 11th July 2026 as a two-day national flood aftermath cleanup exercise following the devastating floods of 29th June 2026.
Announcing the details at a press conference, Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, said the directive by President John Dramani Mahama is aimed at restoring environmental sanitation, clearing flood debris, desilting drains and waterways, and minimizing the risk of future flooding.
“His Excellency the President declared Friday, 10th July and Saturday, 11th July, 2026, as a two day national flood aftermath cleanup exercise as part of government coordinated efforts to restore environmental sanitation,” he said.
The minister outlined a split schedule for the nationwide exercise, which will run from 6 AM to 1 PM on both days.
Friday, 10th July: All government institutions, private institutions, security services, Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and waste management companies will participate.
This includes ministries, MTN, Vodafone, Airtel-Tigo, media houses such as Media General, Multimedia, Channel One, Citi, Metro TV, and all security agencies including the Military, Police, Fire Service, Prisons, Immigration and Customs.
Saturday, 11th July: All communities, residents and security services, with support from MMDAs and waste management companies. Communities mentioned include Chorkor, Jamestown, Legon, Nungua, Teshie, Labadi and Sakumono.
“Everybody, clear your frontage, clear your gutter, desilt your gutter. When you are done, then you can be extending it,” the Minister directed.
Ahmed Ibrahim said the exercise is a presidential directive and must be complied with. Key directives include:
1. To coordinate implementation, liaise with service providers, ensure equitable distribution of logistics, and submit situation reports to the Ministry for onward transmission to the Presidency.
2. To personally supervise and coordinate the exercise. They must assign teams to flood-prone communities, markets, lorry stations, drains and other hotspots.
3. All markets, shops and commercial establishments in affected areas shall remain closed between 6am and 1pm on both days to allow traders, employees and customers to participate. “We are doing this for their good because some markets were flooded… It’s better they are closed for us to be able to clean that place, disinfect it,” he said.
4. All waste must be evacuated immediately to designated transfer stations. Key facilities in Greater Accra including *Achimota, Ashaiman, Teshie, Pantang Waste Transfer Stations, IRCP Kpone, ACARP Ekumfi, Kpone and Pokuase Landfill Sites will operate 24/7 during the exercise. Waste from tricycles will be received free of charge.
5. Environmental health officers will monitor compliance and enforce sanitation bylaws. The Ministry is working with the Police and National Security to protect workers and equipment.
The minister said Parliament will not sit on Friday and Saturday so all MPs can assist in their constituencies. Cabinet has also been rescheduled so all Ministers can participate.
“President Mahama will personally participate in the exercise,” Ibrahim added.
He stressed that this is not the normal monthly sanitation.
“This is a national call to duty. Every Ghanaian has a responsibility to contribute towards restoring environmental cleanliness and preventing future flooding. Failure to do so shall attract the appropriate sanctions under the applicable sanitation and local governance laws.”
The minister noted that cleanup operations will continue beyond the two days until all affected communities are restored.
“Together, let us demonstrate our collective commitment to building cleaner, healthier, and safer, as well as more resilient communities. Let us build the Ghana we want together,” he concluded.
