Health screening, relief items provided for Côte d’Ivoire returnees — Linda Ocloo

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has confirmed that  health screening has been conducted with relief items provided for the Ghanaian nationals repatriated from Côte d’Ivoire.

The repatriation followed a demolition exercise in the Port Bouët Municipality of Abidjan, which affected some Ghanaians, leaving them stranded.

According to the Regional Minister, the affected returnees underwent medical checks upon arrival in Ghana, including blood testing, with individuals showing signs of illness receiving immediate medical attention.

“We have our health workers around. We have gone through screening. They have gone through blood testing. Some of them had coughs, and they have been attended to,” she said, adding that the exercise formed part of standard procedures for managing the returnees.

Madam Ocloo further indicated that relief items were distributed to support the returnees as they begin reintegration into their respective communities.

She made the remarks when she addressed the media after receiving some of the returnees affected by the demolition exercise in Abidjan, who identified as being from the Greater Accra Region.

“From NADMO, we are giving them some relief items to make sure it sustains them until they get back to their feet.”

The Government of Ghana has commenced the repatriation of 327 nationals affected by the demolition exercise in Côte d’Ivoire.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 228 of the affected Ghanaians have already arrived in Ghana, while arrangements have been completed for the remaining 99 to return.

The displaced nationals were said to have been living in areas impacted by the demolition, which led to the loss of livelihoods and accommodation.

Authorities in Côte d’Ivoire have indicated plans to compensate affected persons, while Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan continues to engage stakeholders and monitor developments.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed government’s commitment to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians abroad, adding that further updates will be communicated as necessary.
