The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspects in connection with the robbery and fatal shooting of the father-in-law of Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of GOLDBOD, following what authorities describe as a coordinated intelligence-led operation.

Addressing journalists at the regional police headquarters, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian T. Yohonu assured Ghanaians that the Service remains resolute in its fight against violent crime and will relentlessly pursue criminal networks across the country.

“As I have always assured the good people of Ghana, my team and I remain committed to ensuring that we make life uncomfortable for criminal elements in the country,” the IGP stated.

“No matter how far they run or how much they hide, we will continue to pursue them, dismantle their activities and bring them to justice.”

According to the IGP, the incident occurred on February 10, 2026, at Owhim Tigo Junction, where the victim, identified as Andrews Amankwah, was attacked during a robbery and his Toyota Hilux vehicle taken. He later passed on at the hospital after being rushed for medical attention.

Police investigations began immediately after the report, with a special team comprising the Ashanti Regional Command, the Regional Intelligence Unit, the Anti-Robbery Squad and the Cyber Vetting Team from CID Headquarters deployed to track the suspects.

The first breakthrough came on February 18 with the arrest of Akwasi Manu, who was found with a mobile phone belonging to the deceased. He has since been arraigned before the Asokwa Circuit Court and remanded into custody.

Subsequent intelligence operations led to the arrest of Bashiru Tanko at Atonsu High School Junction, followed by Kwadwo Amponsah and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah at Hwereso near Boankra and Danyame Soldier Barracks in Kumasi.

A fifth suspect, believed to be the gang leader, died from injuries sustained during the police operation.

Investigators say the group forms part of a larger criminal syndicate that specialises in stealing pick-up trucks and Land Cruiser vehicles, which are then transported and sold through local and international contacts.

The network has also been linked to similar robberies in Tarkwa and other parts of the Ashanti Region.

Police revealed that the suspects typically monitored their targets before striking and used threats or violence to seize vehicles when victims resisted.

The IGP extended condolences to the bereaved family, including Mr Gyamfi and his relatives, and praised officers and members of the public whose cooperation aided the arrests.

He also reiterated the Service’s warning to criminal groups nationwide.

“To the criminals out there, take note: we will leave no stone unturned. By every legal means possible, we will pursue you, arrest you and bring you to justice,” Mr Yohonu said.

Police say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to dismantle the broader network linked to the attack.
