The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to intensify efforts to promote the teaching and use of indigenous languages in schools.
He emphasised that strengthening local language education is critical to safeguarding Ghana’s cultural identity and preventing the gradual loss of native tongues.
The appeal was delivered on his behalf by the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, during Parliament’s May Day 2026 commemoration held on Monday, May 4.
In the address, the Speaker acknowledged that several Ghanaian languages are already part of the school curriculum, including Akan variants such as Akuapem Twi, Asante Twi and Fante, alongside Dagaare, Dagbani, Ewe, Dangbe, Ga, Nzema, Gonja and Kasem. However, he noted that more sustained efforts are needed to deepen their use and relevance.
He further encouraged parents to support this initiative by speaking and teaching local languages at home to help preserve them for future generations.
