The popular phrase, “see something, say something,” compels citizens to speak up when issues of public concern arise.
In that spirit, I call on the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, as well as the Ghana Tourism Authority, to provide clarity regarding a viral video circulating on social media.
The video shows a group of foreigners parading through the streets of Accra in attire many have described as indecent and inconsistent with Ghanaian cultural norms.
The group is reportedly associated with an event dubbed “Karnival Kingdom Ghana 2026,” described as a five-night Caribbean carnival experience scheduled to take place from April 23 to April 28.
This development raises important questions. What is the true purpose of this event? How does it align with Ghana’s cultural values and identity? While Ghana continues to position itself as a welcoming destination for international visitors, it is equally important to ensure that cultural exchanges are respectful and do not undermine the country’s traditions.
Tourism plays a vital role in national development, and efforts to attract global audiences are commendable. However, openness should not come at the expense of cultural integrity.
Many Ghanaians have expressed concern that the scenes depicted in the viral video stand in stark contrast to the values and modesty that define Ghanaian society.
Equally concerning is the reported presence of uniformed police officers providing escort during the procession. This raises further questions about authorization, oversight, and the role of security agencies in such activities.
In light of these concerns, it is imperative that the relevant authorities provide a detailed explanation to the public. Transparency and accountability are essential in maintaining public trust, particularly on matters that touch on national identity and cultural representation.
Ghanaians deserve to understand the intent, approval process, and regulatory framework governing events of this nature. As stakeholders in the nation’s cultural and tourism landscape, citizens have every right to seek answers and ensure that Ghana’s image is upheld with dignity.
