Mahama and Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang to join national clean-up exercise

President John Dramani Mahama and Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang are scheduled to join citizens across the country in an upcoming national general cleaning exercise.

The announcement follows a growing push for nationwide civic participation after recent heavy seasonal floods caused widespread damage and blocked drainage infrastructure across several regions.

    A Unified National Effort

The involvement of the presidency underscores the scale of the upcoming two-day exercise, which aims to address acute sanitation challenges, clear heavily choked storm drains, and manage accumulated municipal waste.

The exercise has garnered substantial support from prominent civil society and religious institutions.

The Christian Council of Ghana has officially backed the initiative, actively rallying local churches and congregations to step out and clear public spaces within their respective communities.

    Regional Compliance and Enforcement

The clean-up campaign will launch across seven affected regions, with significant operations concentrated within the Greater Accra Region. Local government authorities and traditional leaders have introduced strict enforcement measures to ensure maximum public compliance.

The Ga Traditional Council and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have both issued directives ordering the temporary closure of all local businesses, shops, and markets during the designated morning hours of the clean-up.

Government officials have warned that individuals or businesses that refuse to shut down or fail to participate face legal penalties, as municipal teams move to ensure final disposal sites, such as the Adepa landfill, are ready to receive the collected waste.
