NAE WULƆMƆ & GBORBU WULƆMƆ ARE OVERLORDS – NOT GA MAŊTSƐ

If the Ga Maŋtsɛ cannot legitimately claim the title of Overking, then he cannot be considered the king of Accra. He must refrain from tampering with the titles of the two eminent GaDaŋme Overlords: Nae Wulɔmɔ and Gborbu Wulɔmɔ. The authority and responsibilities of kings are distinct from those of Lords. If Ga Maŋtsɛ, claims the title of “Overking,” is right. It is essential to recognize the distinction between political authority and ritual supremacy within Ga tradition.
The Ga Maŋtsɛ embodies the political kingship of Accra, responsible for governance, land, and civic administration. By contrast, Nae Wulɔmɔ and Gborbu Wulɔmɔ hold the sacred and spiritual authority of the Ga State, custodians of divine and ritual order. The king’s methods have always been power, peace and passion, the lord’s purity, peace and pacification.
While political and spiritual spheres are complementary, they remain distinct. A king embracing a title implying ritual overlordship risks blurring these boundaries, misapplying authority to a domain beyond his traditional mandate. To preserve the integrity of Ga governance and cosmology, each office must respect its proper domain: the Maŋtsɛ with political leadership, and the Wulɔmɔ with spiritual oversight.

The title “Overking” if adopted by Ga Maŋtsɛ implies:
    Paramount authority over subordinate kings
    Supra-traditional jurisdiction
Centralized sovereignty beyond a single stool
However, Ga political structure traditionally functions through distributed authority, not absolute monarchy. Authority is negotiated through councils of elders, divisional chiefs, and ritual custodians.
The Wulɔmɔ institution is not political kingship but ritual supremacy.
Nae Wulɔmɔ – Supreme ritual authority of the Ga State
Gborbu Wulɔmɔ – High priest within the Ga spiritual hierarchy These offices
mediate between the people and the divine order,
    sanctify kingship itself and
possess sacral authority that predates certain political configurations.
In fact, in Ga cosmology, the priest consecrates the king; the king does not outrank the priest in spiritual hierarchy. So if a king adopts the language of “Overlord,” he collapse the sacred distinction between political and ritual sovereignty?
Traditionally what we know is that, the Ga Maŋtsɛ governs people. Nae and Gborbu Wulɔmei governs sacred order. Presumably therefore an “Overlord” (if meaning ritual supremacy) belongs to priesthood, not monarchy.
If “Overking” is interpreted merely as paramount chief among chiefs, it may remain political. But if it implies sacral overlordship, it risks doctrinal confusion.
In Ga tradition, political and spiritual authority complement each other, but they are never interchangeable. A king should be claiming the mantle of “Overking”, not in the sacred sphere which risks confusion, overreach, and the undermining of centuries-old balance. As the proverb teaches: “Two captains cannot lead the same fellowship.”
Let every title reflect its rightful role. The Maŋtsɛ commands in the political realm; the Wulɔmɔ commands in the spiritual. Respecting this dual structure preserves the dignity of kingship, the sanctity of ritual authority, and the harmony of the Ga State.
