The driver of the STC bus involved in the fiery crash at the Birimso Bridge on the Accra-Kumasi Highway has recounted the events leading to the tragic incident.

Speaking in a widely circulated video, the driver said the bus was carrying 31 passengers at the time of the crash.

According to him, only about 10 passengers managed to escape, while the rest were trapped and reportedly perished in the fire.

“We were about 31 people on the bus. The number of people we were able to get out was about 10, and the rest got burnt,” he said.

Earlier, the Ghana Police Service announced a complete blockade of the N6 Highway, also known as the Accra-Kumasi Highway, following a crash involving a passenger bus, an articulated truck, and a sedan.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Monday, August 3, 2026, the Police Service said the crash occurred at the Birimso Bridge and had brought traffic in both directions to a standstill.

“There is a pile-up road crash at Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway (Accra-Kumasi Highway), involving a high-occupancy passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck, and a sedan, resulting in a complete blockade of the road for both Accra-bound and Kumasi-bound traffic,” the police stated.

The Eastern South Regional Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) team from Kibi was dispatched to the scene to manage the situation.

According to the police, traffic has been temporarily diverted through Kibi at Nsutam for Accra-bound motorists and at Apedwa for motorists travelling towards Kumasi.

The diversions took effect on Monday, August 3, 2026, as efforts continued to clear the crash scene and restore normal traffic flow.

The Police Service urged motorists and other road users to cooperate with officers at the scene and exercise caution while using the alternative routes.
