A delegation from the World Bank Group has undertaken a working visit to the Anwiah-Teleku-Bokazo Cooperative Mining Site in the Ellembele Municipality of the Western Region to assess government efforts aimed at formalising Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector.
The visit formed part of the World Bank’s continued interest in supporting initiatives that promote responsible and sustainable mining practices across the country.
During the inspection tour, the delegation observed activities at the mining site and assessed compliance with key safety and regulatory standards, including occupational safety measures, the prevention of child labour and the adoption of environmentally responsible mining practices.
The team also engaged stakeholders on measures being implemented to strengthen the formalisation drive within the small-scale mining industry while ensuring the protection of host communities and the environment.
Members of the delegation included representatives from rCOMSDEP, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project, the Environmental Protection Authority, officials from the World Bank Group, as well as traditional authorities from the beneficiary communities.
rCOMSDEP reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with stakeholders to advance a formalised, responsible and sustainable small-scale mining sector capable of creating economic opportunities while safeguarding communities and the environment.
