Afenyo-Markin under scrutiny as NPP internal tensions thicken

The internal dynamics of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have come under renewed scrutiny, with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin at the centre of growing debate over his leadership, alliances, and party cohesion following the party’s recent presidential primary.

Sources within the party suggest increasing anxiety over a possible reshuffle within the Minority Caucus, a development that has heightened uncertainty about leadership stability and sparked concerns among some members about the future direction of the Caucus.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s leadership has, in recent weeks, become a focal point of internal discussions, with differing views emerging over his approach to party management and strategy.

The Effutu MP’s rise to the Minority Leader position followed the exit of former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu. While the transition marked a generational shift, it has also been accompanied by lingering perceptions within sections of the party regarding how the change occurred.

Some party observers have speculated about behind-the-scenes manoeuvring involving influential figures, including Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, although such claims remain unsubstantiated.

The NPP’s presidential primary further brought Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s political positioning into focus.

Publicly, he advocated neutrality among party leaders to ensure fairness and unity.

However, his widely reported association with presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has drawn criticism from some quarters, who argue that it conflicted with his public stance.

The outcome in his Effutu constituency—where Kennedy Agyapong secured a commanding lead over eventual flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia—has also been cited by observers as raising questions about influence and internal alignment.

Following the primary, Mr. Afenyo-Markin publicly congratulated Dr. Bawumia and has since taken steps to align with the party’s new leadership direction.

His subsequent engagements and public endorsements have been framed as efforts to foster unity ahead of future electoral contests.

While some within the party view this as a pragmatic move to consolidate support, others interpret it as a strategic repositioning amid evolving internal dynamics.

Unverified claims have also emerged linking the Minority Leader to negative media narratives targeting certain members of the caucus.

Though no evidence has been presented, the allegations have added to perceptions of internal friction.

Additionally, there are reports of quiet dissatisfaction among some Minority MPs, centred on concerns about consultation, trust, and cohesion—issues that remain largely unaddressed in the public domain.

As the NPP looks ahead to the 2028 general elections, the situation highlights broader challenges within the party, including managing competing ambitions, maintaining unity, and strengthening internal trust.

For political observers, the developments surrounding Mr. Afenyo-Markin reflect the complexities of leadership within a party navigating post-primary realignments.

While some see a leader adapting to shifting circumstances, others say the moment raises deeper questions about consistency and credibility within the party’s ranks.
