Georgina Opoku, popularly known as Asor, the developer behind a parking and washing bay structure under the Flower Pot Interchange, has defended her actions, insisting she obtained all necessary approvals from the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly before starting construction.
Speaking to Citi News, Madam Asor said she would not act contrary to the laws of the country. She explained that in October 2025, officials from the highways department and the assembly conducted a two-hour orientation with her, outlining the requirements for the project at the site.
“On 18th November, 2025, I had the permit from the Assembly,” she said.
Madam Asor also appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama, highlighting the significant personal investment she has made in the temporary structure, intended for use as a parking space and washing bay.
“I spent 35,000 on electricity. ECG did not collect the money, they wrote what was needed, and I made the purchase. I spent almost 50,000 for electricity and water. One washing bay machine is $19,000 and the room is $11,000. I am just pleading with the president, I know he is a father,” be said.
On February 9, 2026, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Ocloo, ordered an immediate halt to construction on a new structure being built under the East Legon overpass, citing public safety risks and violations of spatial planning regulations.
The work, which was taking place close to the East Legon Police Station, raised concerns that it could obstruct public infrastructure and encroach on the right-of-way.
In enforcing the directive, the Minister also asked the Municipal Chief Executive to review and potentially revoke any permits linked to the project to ensure compliance with approved urban planning guidelines.
In a separate interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, Dr Michael Mensah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ayawaso West, clarified that the structure erected was intended as a temporary platform for a glass structure to serve as an office for the washing bay and car park.
He added that the developer had not fully met conditions requiring coordination with Urban Roads, leading to the concerns that prompted the regional minister’s intervention. He also confirmed that the permit for the development had been revoked.
