The National Maritime Security Committee (MARSEC) has urged the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) to sustain its leadership in strengthening maritime awareness and information sharing as part of its mandate to safeguard Ghana’s territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

In its information brief last week, the Committee disclosed developments across the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, and parts of West Africa, noting that geopolitical tensions, piracy, armed robbery at sea, illegal fishing, trafficking, and other illicit activities are reshaping the global maritime environment.

For Ghana, MARSEC stated that understanding developments beyond the country’s waters is critical to safeguarding national interests.

“Effective information sharing and multi‑agency coordination among maritime authorities, security agencies, and industry stakeholders are important to building a unified Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), it said.

According to the committee, maintaining a secure maritime space requires continuous investment in domain awareness technologies and operational synergy with national and international partners.

The report concluded that by sustaining this strategic approach, the GMA will provide a vital framework for stakeholders to address both immediate threats and the long‑term readiness needed to counter evolving global risks.
