Celebrated Ghanaian veteran actress Grace Nortey has reportedly passed away.
The legendary actress, popularly known as ‘Maame Gyata’, died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, according to reports circulating following her death.
Grace Nortey celebrated her 89th birthday on February 1, 2026, and made a rare public appearance around the occasion.
She had been a prominent figure in Ghanaian theatre, television and film for more than five decades.
She became particularly popular during Ghana’s golden era of television and theatre, featuring in productions including Obra, Osofo Dadzie, Key Soap Concert Party, Cantata and Thursday Theatre.
Grace Nortey also featured in several notable films, including Nana Akoto, Matters of the Heart, Ties That Bind, Sinking Sands, Amakye and Dede, and the internationally acclaimed ‘Beasts of No Nation’.
Her commanding performances and portrayal of strong, outspoken female characters earned her a special place among Ghana’s most respected screen and stage actresses.
News of her reported passing comes months after she was celebrated for her contribution to Ghanaian cinema and theatre.
In April 2025, she was among veteran actors honoured at AshantiFest for their contribution to the development of the Ghanaian film industry.
Her death marks another major loss to Ghana’s entertainment industry, with fans and colleagues expected to pay tribute to a woman whose career spanned generations.
