Esther Ofosu, one of the Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa, has said fear and growing tension forced many people to abandon their businesses and return home.
Speaking on Joy Prime after arriving in Ghana, she said the situation became difficult for foreigners as attacks and intimidation increased in some communities.
“They burned shops and people became scared,” she said. “A lot of us could no longer continue staying there.”
According to her, many Ghanaians struggled to survive because business activities had slowed down and landlords were still demanding rent despite the harsh conditions.
She explained that some people lost their sources of income completely during the unrest, leaving them with no option but to join the evacuation exercise organised by the Ghanaian government.
Esther also praised authorities for helping affected citizens return safely to Ghana following the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
