Ghanaian entertainer and dancer Leftizzle has reflected on the evolution of Ghana’s dance industry, stating that modern dancers are more fortunate than performers from his generation because they now receive recognition and financial rewards for their craft.
Speaking about his journey in entertainment, Leftizzle explained that dancing during his era was dominated by hip-hop and required exceptional skill and discipline.
“In our time, dancing was purely about hip-hop, so only the very best dancers could perform. It was not like today’s dance challenges,” he said.
According to him, becoming a backup dancer for musicians in those days was extremely difficult due to the demanding nature of hip-hop choreography.
“Our style was hardcore hip-hop, which was very difficult. It was even hard for a musician to select you as a backup dancer,” he stated.
He noted that despite the hard work dancers invested, they rarely received financial compensation.
“Things have changed now because dancers today even get paid. Back then, we were not paid at all. Musicians felt they were doing us a favour just by featuring us in their music videos,” he recalled.
